In Your Position; In God’s Time

In Your Position; In God’s Time
Esther 4:14

AUDIO: Listen to the audio version of this post HERE.

Esther 4:14 (NIV)
14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?

This weekend, the Jewish community celebrates the Jewish holiday of Purim. Unfortunately, an Internet search for Purim quickly gives a wrong impression of what Purim is all about. Where, at first glance, Purim appears to be a time for “downing as much alcohol as possible”[a], there is actually a Biblical foundation upon which Purim stands. As Sara Coughlin (for Refinery29.com) writes:

“Purim’s origins are found in the Book of Esther in the Tanakh, or the Old Testament, which tells the story of how one woman (Esther) saved the Jewish people of Persia from certain death.”[b]

For those readers who may not be familiar with the story of Queen Esther, I strongly encourage you to take the time to read the entire book of Esther in the Bible, or at least listen to an audio Bible version of it. In short summary, Haman (who was the Persian king’s right-hand man) had formed a genocidal plot to kill all the Jewish people of the Persian kingdom. However, Haman was unaware that the king’s new Queen, Esther, was of Jewish heritage. Esther is enlisted by her uncle to approach the king (unlawfully) and make a stand for the lives of her people.

Esther 4:14 (NIV)
14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?

To prepare her heart and spirit, Esther fasts and asks those around her to fast before she approaches the king:

Esther 4:16 (NIV)
16 “Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.”

When Esther approaches the king in Haman’s presence, the king favors Esther and saves the Jewish people from annihilation.

God places His people in strategic places. He has a mission for you to carry out. If you will just pray and fast and focus on God, He can reveal His marching orders to you. While it may not be as grand as saving an entire race of peoples from genocide, God will use you (in your position) to influence God’s Kingdom.
